Art is human
As an art historian, artist and graphic designer, I created the ‘Human Logo’ not only as an act of resistance against generative AI, but also as a symbol of pride in my own creativity. Because I am proud of my work, which comes entirely from me. I am proud not to delegate my intellectual, manual and creative abilities to mediocre technology. Because my knowledge stems from an infinite number of people who came before me, in a long chain of human innovation and creation stretching back tens of thousands of years. I refuse to delegate my mind to a machine.
I chose this symbol—a negative hand within a circle of sprayed dots—because this type of image has been created by our ancestors over tens of thousands of years. They can be found all over the world wherever humans have been. They were made by women, children and men, using a simple technique of spraying pigment from the mouth onto a hand pressed against a wall. Sometimes, the same space will feature numerous hands, created over a span of millennia. To me, these hands represent, in a single symbol, the mark of our humanity, our mutual belonging across time and space. We therefore assert, through our marks upon the world, our distinctly human creativity.
Since I cannot influence these huge corporations and the techno-fascists who run them, I have decided to stand up for myself as a human person. I have no true power over anyone but myself, and so I created this logo because I believe I am not the only one repulsed by the environmental, social, economic and political cancer that is LLMs and generative AI. Our work, our knowledge, our creativity has value. These machines cannot create. These machines are not human. Be wary of those who tell you otherwise; they are the ones who stand to gain from your subjugation.
The logo is therefore free to use, and I encourage you to use it on your work, texts, images, websites, apps, and so on. To show that you, too, are proud to be a human being and that you refuse to use LLMs and generative AI. I only ask that you do not modify it or use it for commercial purposes. Of course, I have no way of verifying how you use the logo; I am relying on your word and your sense of ethics. Indeed, the people who control these models imagine that you are like them: people without imagination or moral fibre, who are willing to sacrifice your humanity to cheat and exploit. I am offering this logo without deriving any profit or benefit from it; I hope you find it useful!
